It's been eight years since the GHL formed and
began its wonderful journey that continues even today. The 09 season is no doubtedly less than a month away with the weather getting
frigid and the initiation of the rink construction.
This year presents the GHL nation with new rink
construction management. The rink has long been primarily built by members of the GHLPA Andrew Grotte and Nich Riveland with great help from Jason Grotte, Zach Myron, and Kelly Grotte, as well
as others. Jumping onboard this year will be Zach Riveland, Jamyn Riveland, and Tytus Myron.
Stepping down are GHLPA members Andrew
and Nich. So what does this mean for the 09 GHL Rink? It's hard to say.
Andrew confided to the GHL "They'll do a fine job." It is
well known, though, that the former rink manager prefers perfection and practicality. Nich was less optimistic
of the new construction team, "I don't know, it's their first year on the job and I doubt they know the ins and
outs of the GHL rink."
Both Andrew's and Nich's concerns were temporarily put
to rest when they made a visit on construction day one. "They seemed to be doing an adequate job," relayed Nich
to Andrew after observing the progress. As the two veteran onlookers further surveyed, they began to
notice some differences in procedures of assembly, and minor rink changes, but were still satisfied.
Nich and Andrew offered a few trivial tips to the
team but generally stayed uninvolved and officially passed on the job to the younger members of the GHLPA. "There's
a lot of things you learn about building the GHL rink through the years that you can store in your memory bank for the next
year that generally makes things run smoother and more efficiently, as well as giving you a better overall product.
These guys are still learning." agreed Andrew and Nich about the team.
The 09 team already learned one such lesson the hard
way. After a hard day's work, two sides and an end were erected. The next morning, one whole side had been unerected
by the wind. Lesson One: Secure the boards because the wind in North Dakota is perpetual and prevalent. The
boys had forgot this little part of their plan and they paid.
They will have to reassemble the east side and have
had to deal with the commissioner's conniption fit. Kelly Grotte said of the booboo, "This kind of thing is almost inexcusable.
I don't care if it's their first year on the job. I mean, we can't hold our breath hoping that the breath of
North Dakota won't knock over the rink!"
The same mistake, however, was also made by the
previous rink team several years ago when they didn't tie down the boards well enough. There are also
some major rink changes in mind this year. The team has not yet incorporated a sin bin and does not currently have
it in their plans.
The one lingering question remains, though. What
will the GHL improve be this year? Or will it be the first year without improvement, rink-wise? One thing
is sure: it's a new era in the GHL, one with new rink management, new players, website improvement, media, accumulated history
and prestige, and high expectations.
Commssioner Kelly Grotte only hopes that all of this
is all for the good of the league.
